LUDHIANA: City residents deposited tax amounting to Rs 42 lakh using the online option this financial year. Out of the 10,615 residents who filed tax, 1,000 did so online over the past one month. "This year, more people opted for the online facility as compared to last year as they understood the procedure", said MC secretary Hartej Singh.
In the 2013-14 fiscal, a total of 64,292 people opted for online tax submission all through the year.
Most residents chose the online option towards the end when they encountered huge crowds in MC offices.
But this year, the civic body earned Rs 2.54 crore from property tax from all four zones till Thursday. According to MC officials, the online facility scores with residents as they can easily get a receipt for their tax in a few minutes. Moreover, the online portal also provides details of the tax filed in previous years by generating the Property Tax Return (PTR) ID.
Residents can file tax with 10% rebate till February 28. Tax can also be filed after March 1 up to March 10 without rebate. Penalty will be imposed on residents from April 1 onwards. "It is better to file tax online as we can avoid long queues. It only takes a few minutes to file tax as the online application is an easy way", said Manpreet Kaur, a city resident.
Be Careful People must be careful with self assessment while choosing the online option
In case residents file wrong tax, they can approach the MC office to settle the balance
If a resident fails to get the proper amount filed, a penalty along with interest will be imposed on the defaulter
